There are a couple of storms coming this weekend and a weather warning for rain & wind has been posted for my area (Riverside CA). I'm supposed to leave for Calico Ghost Town on Saturday and return on Tuesday. Rain is expected at Calico but not as much as home. All the sites at Calico are dirt only which means mud. How easy is it to get stuck in the mud? Also I am wondering about the wind factor through the Cajon Pass. My trailer is less than 4,000 lbs and I only have limited driving experience. I welcome feedback and advice.

Gosh - what is it about the weather and my camping trips? ;D It's getting so bad that whenever rain is expected my family asks if I have camping plans. At lease now I have a trailer instead of a tent provided that I can get from point A to point B.

Take care,

I say go for it...if you find the conditions all that bad, you can always trun around a head back home... ???

What's a little wind and rain - hey, it's sunny California, after all... ;D Think of it this way, Calico can use some 'moisture' once in a while, to keep the dust down... Bad weather for upcoming trip - need feedback (3)

Well, I'll take the other side. Is there something really special about Calico, this particular weekend that won't be there some other weekend? ???

You have a weather warning, you say. You say that you have limited driving experience. Might be more driving experience waiting for you, than you bargained for. :Bad weather for upcoming trip - need feedback (5)

Ought to be a pretty exciting weekend, tho maybe not what you intended. Probably add significantly to your "experience" however. Bad weather for upcoming trip - need feedback (6)

And, weather forecasts are not always reliable. You could go ahead and get ready, and then see what the forecast is on Friday. Decide then. :-\

Good luck, which ever choice you make. Bad weather for upcoming trip - need feedback (7)

Cajon Pass can get nasty windy. And Calico Ghost Town campground is not only dirt, it's all unlevel so you'll be trying to get the trailer level in mud, or you'll get it level and then it will go to unlevel as parts sink into the mud. I agree with Ray - is there something special about Calico this weekend? Also, having been to Calico, I can't imagine what you'll do there for 3 days? Of course, with the predicted rain, there won't be any good spot down here for the weekend either.

I agree that you might be better off rescheduling your outing. However, if you do decide to go, and if it is windy, drive more slowly. High winds can really push an RV around a lot and the faster you go the greater the probability that you can get out of control and bad things can happen.

Often those accidents in Cajon Pass are caused by higher speeds combined with windy conditions.

Cancel the trip. Cajon is dangerous in a major storm with snow levels predicted down to 4000 feet. Truckers get blown over and, as you say, you are a newbie. Calico will be a mess and setting up in a major storm will be even messier. Calico will be there next week and, for that matter, even next year.

Stay home and turn the furnance up.

The dirt used in calico rv parking is old mine tailing's it can get pretty wet before it becomes a problem. I have been there thru some pretty nice rains and it does not turn in to a slippery mess like you may have experienced elsewhere. There is some old volcanic silt in the area that does get very slippery and sticks like cement when wet but there is none in the camp ground. The mule canyon cut across will be unusable but Odessa and Bizmark canyons will be fun with a bit of rain. Watch for flash floods if you are in the box canyons but they are not much of a problem with this kind of rain. Flash floods are a bigger problem with thunder showers in the summer monsoon season.

As far as the wind in the cajon it is always breezy there but this storm is not going to bring much with with it. Santa Anna's are much more dangerous. Slow down and use your head you can always turn back before you hit the canyon if you think the winds are too strong. The winds will be the worst at the bottom usually. On the top they always blow but are usually drivable.

I am going that way on Saturday in a class A pulling a trailer if it makes you feel any better. I know others are cautioning you to cancel the trip but if you are like me and work a 60 to 80 hour week, you have to make the best use of your time off.

Best of luck don't do anything you are scared of, uncomfortable maybe but not scared Bad weather for upcoming trip - need feedback (14)

A good rule of thumb is that if you are worrying about any aspect of the trip, weather, roads, etc., just don't go. Those constant worries can rob a trip of all the fun -- and if the worries prove true, a lot more than just the fun. There will be another weekend for your trip when the weather will be perfect.

No one will think you are a wimp for playing safe -- and you have nothing to prove to anyone except yourself.

Maybe you could pick an alternate destination where the sun is shining ;D

Best of luck whatever you decide.......

Thanks for the feeback - lots of good points on both sides to ponder. I'm going to wait and see how things look before I make a final decision. At the moment I am leaning towards getting an early start and taking my time getting there. I am also wiling not to go or tun back if need be.

The only rush for going to Calico this weekend is that it is already paid for. Because I have two reservations I would forfeit two nights of the three if I cancel now. I called Calico today and found out that I could arrive early and get into my site anytime before the 3:00 pm check in as long as the site is empty. Otherwise I could park in the parking lot and visit the ghost town. If only I had known that before I added the third night which was due to the late check in time and it getting dark around the 5:00 hour.

The first night at Calico will be in my brother's memory. I was suppose to go with him and his wife last spring but I backed out. That said - I will only move forward as long as I feel safe and comfortable.

Thanks again and take care,

Ok, I wised up. Saw the weather forecast and changed my plans. It's getting uglier not better. I am at peace with my decision so it's probably the right choice.

I will go on Monday and return on Wednesday. And believe me I know to get a

very

early start on Wednesday because traffic will be awful. But if I have to choice between holiday traffic or high winds & rain the leaser of the two evils would be the traffic.

I would've gone. Bad weather for upcoming trip - need feedback (20)

It rained pretty good here but was not as windy as expected. While I do think I could had gone today I'm not sorry that I decided to wait a couple of days. It gave me a chance to get some stuff done without rushing but more so I was able to drive my sister Yukon in the rain towing the trailer from the dealership. I found I was at ease while driving, even on a bridge in a construction zone which had narrow lanes.

Then I tried parking the trailer at the storage place (I moved back to my original storage place). My parking adventure was so interesting.....
I started off doing well but I just couldn't get it exactly where I needed it. I almost had it right a couple of times only to messed it up and end up way off the space. It would had been a little easier without another trailer right behind my space or even if I had someone directing me into the parking space. In time & experience I will learn the trick of the trade and will be able to master parking in my space.

Ok, I have to confessed that another tenant ended up backing the trailer in for me. After a very long period of time I had stopped making progress and needed to end it. The funny part is that I didn't feel nervous or uneasy. The guy helped me disconnect and I was able to tell him step by step what needed to be done as we did it. He also gave a suggestion that he did when he had a boat. He would have a checklist but ended up listing the tasks on clothes pins instead. When it came time to depart he would hang the clothes pins and then remove them as he completed the task. Rather than put the clothes pins on the propane tanks cover as he suggested I am thinking of pinning them to a basket and tossing them in afterwards. His suggestion seem like a good idea to consider since sometimes I will glance over text without reading.

There is more coming. Rain and snow predictions now extend thru Tuesday with the snow level heading down towards 4000 feet. Cajon Pass tops out at 4190 feet. Got chains for the truck and trailer? ???

Take some advice from an old southern California mountaineer -- never head into bad weather.

Carl-

I took your advice and decided not to head to Calico due to weather. I didn't care much for the 31+ mph winds due in Tuesday at Calico either. I was able to change my dates to spring so hopefully it will work out then. Thanks for the weather forecast and information on the Cajon Pass.

I will be camping at thecampground I really like in my home town. Between the green grass and concrete pad it will still be mud free if rains come. I decided to be brave and selected the site I really wanted so I will be backing into a site for the first time. If worse comes to worse I will ask for help or if necessary change sites to a pull through site.

Good decision!

Have a great "local camping trip".

In the unasked for advice category, when backing your trailer if you grip you steering wheel at the bottom, your trailer will move in the same direction that you move your steering wheel. Slow and easy (and pulling forward to realign as necessary) does it!

Have fun!
