NEW LONDON — NEW LONDON — The New London-Spicer Wildcats weathered the storm in the Wright County West Division opener en route to defeating the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Lakers in five sets on Thursday evening.

NLS won 24-26, 25-21, 17-25, 25-22, 15-12.

“Our passing was great tonight,” said Wildcats head coach Tina Peterson. “In the end we had the heart and we did the right things. Our team chemistry is finally starting to come together.”

Early on throughout the match, HLWW utilized tip hits over the net to avoid blocks from NLS’ middle blockers and beat its back row. Then, the Wildcats figured it out before it was too late.

“We finally picked up a few of their tips in the fourth and fifth sets — they were tipping us to death,” Peterson said. “We finally figured it out during the fifth set, but they still managed to do it after every timeout.”

Wildcats senior middle blocker Ellary Peterson led with 17 kills. She also tallied 10 digs, a team-high two block aces and a pair of block assists.

“She is calling out where the hitters and setters are; if you pull her off the court, things fall apart,” Peterson said. “She’s just that natural leader. She knows the court and the girls rely on her.”

Behind Peterson, the duo of senior outside hitter Avery Rich and junior setter/right-side Kendra Gerhardson put in strong performances. Rich recorded 15 kills, nine digs and four serve aces. Gerhardson tallied 29 set assists, 15 digs, 11 kills and one block assist.

“Gerhardson picked the right hitters and mixed it up perfectly. She had an all-around great game and we need her to keep going,” Peterson said. “Avery came around tonight and we needed that from her. She made some smart choices. … I was really happy with that.”

Joining Gerhardson and Peterson, sophomore outside hitter Grace Truscinski and sophomore libero Dakota Rich tallied double-digits in digs with 15 and 13.
